When is the Mayor's Back to School Fair?

Friday, August 4, 2017; 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Where is the event held?

Centennial Building at Fair Park. Please check-in at the Centennial Building located at: 1001 Washington St., Dallas, TX 75210.

Is the event open to the public?

The Fair's activities and services are free and open to anyone. However, the free school supplies are available ONLY to public-school children who reside in the City of Dallas or attend Dallas ISD schools and meet the 2017 Federal Poverty Income guidelines.

Is there a cost to attend?

No, it is a free event.

Who is eligible to receive the free school supplies?

Recipients of free school supplies must be public school children from the ages of 4 – 18, who reside in the City of Dallas or attend a Dallas ISD school, and whose families meet Federal Poverty Income guidelines:

How do I qualify to receive the free school supplies at the fair?

At the Fair or at a pre-registration event you must present:

  • a picture ID,
  • proof of residency, and
  • proof of income.

The picture ID includes a state drivers license, state identification card, Military identification card, or Foreign consulate-issued identification i.e. Marticula Consular.

The City of Dallas proof of residence includes:

  • May, June, July or August 2017 utility bill (electricity, water, phone or gas) showing applicant name and current address;

  • any mail sent to applicant showing applicant name and current address, with a postmark from either May, June, July or August 2017; or

  • letter from landlord or apartment management company, on company letterhead, indicating proof of residency during May, June, July or August 2017.

The proof of income includes:

  • Paycheck stubs from May, June, July or August 2017; or

  • a letter dated in May, June, July or August 2017 on agency or company letterhead from an employer, welfare office, caseworker, or Social Security Administration Office indicating annual income and signed by an agent of the company or agency. Letter must include contact phone number for verification.

Pre-register to guarantee receipt of school supplies for your child the day of the Fair and avoid standing in long lines at the Fair! This also allows families more time to take advantage of the services officered at the Fair.

How do I pre-register for the free school supplies?

Participants are able to pre-register by mail or in person at numerous pre-registration sites/events throughout the City of Dallas

To pre-register, parents and/or guardians of students must fill out a registration form and provide the following information: a valid picture ID, proof of City of Dallas residency, and proof of income (please see the question above for examples of acceptable forms of proof for qualification).

If submitting registration by mail, download our registration form and mail it with copies of proof of identification, proof of City of Dallas residency and proof of income.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation and voucher by mail that needs to be brought to the Fair to receive the free school supplies.

Will rain checks be provided if all school supplies are distributed before 2:00 p.m.?

Yes, vouchers for school supplies will be given out if we run out of school supply packets before the event is over. Therefore, there is no need to come stand in line before the event opens at 8:00 a.m.

When I arrive at the event, where do I go to pick up the school supplies?

When you arrive, you will need to check-in at the Centennial Building located at 1001 Washington St., Dallas, TX 75210.

If I pre-registered for the free school supplies, do I need to arrive by certain time?

If you pre-registered, you will be guaranteed free school supplies on the day of the Fair.

What type of entertainment and activities will be provided?

Entertainment will include musical and dance performances, games and interactive demonstrations and booths. Also, free health screenings, dental screenings, vision screenings and haircuts for kids will be available.

Will there be food at the event?

Food and drinks are available for purchase in the Automobile Buildings. There will also be water stations at the event with complimentary water.

Is there a cost for parking?

No, parking is free for this event. You can also ride DART's Green Line to Fair Park Station.

If I can't be there can my children still attend?

Yes, but all children must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.

What happens if it rains?

The fair will continue as scheduled in the event of rain.
